Rheumatology diagnoses and treats degenerative musculoskeletal conditions and inflammatory joint diseases, as well as some systemic autoimmune diseases that affect the whole body. At Gineclinic you will be seen by Dr Estefania Moreno Ruzafa, a specialist in rheumatology. It is worth coming in if you have pain or swelling in your joints that does not go away, stiffness when you get up or persistent back pain.
Dr Moreno works alongside endocrinology, gynecology, nutrition, physiotherapy and psychology in the same center. If you need a bone density scan, it is done at a specialist center.
These are the conditions that come with wear and tear or age: osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, hands or spine; osteoporosis, which makes bones more fragile; back or neck pain from wear, and tendon problems such as a painful shoulder. Come in if pain is limiting your daily life.
Inflammatory joint diseases
They cause inflammation of the joints with no apparent cause: rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout or spondyloarthritis, or back pain that eases with movement and gets worse with rest. Any of these symptoms calls for a visit to a rheumatology specialist.
Systemic autoimmune diseases
These happen when the immune system attacks the body by mistake. Well-known examples are lupus, Sjögren's syndrome, which dries out the eyes and mouth, and scleroderma. Come in if you have intense tiredness, joint pain, skin rashes or fingers that turn white in the cold.
The most common reasons for a visit, explained in the words of the people who come to see us.
The joints in my hands hurt
Pain, stiffness or deformity in the fingers can be osteoarthritis, which is wear of the joint, or arthritis, which is inflammation. They are different conditions with different treatments, so it's important to tell them apart early. Get checked if the pain doesn't go away within a few weeks, if your fingers swell or if they are stiff in the morning. At Gineclinic you are seen by the rheumatologist, who assesses you at the visit and requests the tests you need.
My joints are swollen and stiff in the morning
If your joints swell and are stiff when you get up, it may be arthritis, an inflammation that needs diagnosis and treatment to keep it under control. Get checked if it lasts a few weeks or affects several joints. At Gineclinic you are seen by the rheumatologist, who assesses, diagnoses and treats this type of condition.
I have pain all over and I'm very tired
Widespread pain with severe tiredness and poor sleep can stem from various types of inflammatory disease, and a proper assessment is what allows the most suitable treatment to be set. Get checked if it lasts for months or stops you leading a normal life. At Gineclinic you are seen by the rheumatologist, who looks for the cause and suggests treatment.
I'm worried about osteoporosis
Osteoporosis makes bones more fragile and increases the risk of fractures. After menopause this risk can rise. Get checked if you've been through menopause, if you've broken a bone in a minor fall or knock, or if it runs in your family. At Gineclinic the rheumatologist carries out a full assessment of your bone health, with a bone density scan if needed, and suggests the most suitable treatment.
My joints hurt when I use them
Pain in the knee, hip, back or hands that gets better with rest is often osteoarthritis, the wear of the joint. It is common with age and doesn't always limit you, but it is worth treating to stay mobile. Get checked if the pain doesn't go away within a few weeks or limits your activity. At Gineclinic our rheumatologist will assess you and look for the most suitable treatment to relieve the pain and keep you active.
I've had an attack of severe pain in a joint
Sudden, very intense pain in a joint, often in the big toe, with swelling and redness, may be gout, which is more common in men. It happens when uric acid builds up in the joint. See us when it happens, and don't wait if you also have a fever. At Gineclinic you are seen by the rheumatologist: with a consultation and a blood test, which you can have at the same center, we confirm it, treat it and help you stop it coming back. The nutritionist can also help.
I've been told I may have an autoimmune disease
Systemic autoimmune diseases occur when the body's defenses attack the body itself, and they can affect the joints, the skin or other organs. There are many types and, when well controlled, they allow a normal life. Get checked if one has been suggested to you, or if you have joint pain with tiredness, a low-grade fever or unexplained skin changes. At Gineclinic you are seen by the rheumatologist, who makes the diagnosis with a consultation and a blood test at the same center, and manages treatment and follow-up.
