Endocrinology in Barcelona

Endocrinology deals with hormonal and metabolic disorders: diabetes, the thyroid, cholesterol, weight and the glands that regulate how the body works. At Gineclinic you will be seen by Dr Carlos Puig Jové, a specialist in endocrinology, who looks for the cause of each problem and suggests treatment tailored to you.

There is a testing laboratory in the same center, and Dr Puig works alongside nutrition, gynecology, rheumatology and psychology when your case needs it, to give you a more complete and more convenient approach.

Endocrinology

What we treat

Diagnosis of hormonal disorders

Assessment of the glands that regulate the body, such as the pituitary or the adrenal glands. When you experience tiredness that cannot be explained, changes in weight, blood pressure or sex drive, excess hair, or abnormal blood test results with no clear cause, it is time to see a specialist.

Specialist diabetes treatment

Diagnosis and treatment of diabetes and prediabetes: choosing the most suitable medication, monitoring and follow-up to prevent future complications. Come in if you have just been diagnosed, if you are not seeing improvement or if your treatment needs a change. The center's nutritionist also helps you with your diet.

Thyroid and parathyroid problems

We treat a thyroid that is not working properly, nodules and goiter, as well as calcium problems caused by the parathyroid glands. Come in if you notice tiredness, nervousness, palpitations or weight changes for no reason, if a nodule has appeared or if your blood tests come back abnormal.

Overweight and obesity

We see obesity as a long-term illness, not a lack of willpower. The endocrinologist looks for the causes, checks how it affects your health and, when appropriate, plans medical treatment, together with a nutrition plan and psychological support. See our endocrinologist if your weight worries you or if you have tried before without success.

High cholesterol monitoring and follow-up

Assessment of the causes of high cholesterol or triglycerides, review of any inherited factors and of your target according to your risks. Follow-up of treatment, adjustments and regular reviews.

Cardiovascular risk assessment

A full review of your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, smoking, weight and history to assess your risk of a heart attack or stroke in the future and prepare a prevention plan to reduce it.

Metabolic diseases

This includes prediabetes, metabolic syndrome, fatty liver and high uric acid. These conditions often cause no symptoms and are picked up in a blood test. Come in if there are signs of slightly high blood sugar, fat in the liver or raised uric acid, so they can be tackled in time.

Frequently asked questions

When to see an endocrinologist

The most common reasons for a visit, explained in the words of the people who come to see us.

I think I have a thyroid problem

Tiredness, hair loss, palpitations, nervousness or unexplained weight changes can be signs of a thyroid problem. If the symptoms persist or thyroid problems run in your family, you should see a specialist. At Gineclinic you are seen by the endocrinologist, who reviews the tests to confirm or rule out the problem and suggests treatment and follow-up.

I've been told I have a thyroid nodule

Thyroid nodules are common and the vast majority are benign; they are often found by chance on an ultrasound. Get checked if you've been told you have one, if you notice a lump in your neck or if you find it hard to swallow. At Gineclinic you are seen by the endocrinologist, who reviews the reports and tests you bring and, with a consultation and a blood test at the same center, decides whether follow-up is enough or another test or treatment is needed.

I have polycystic ovaries and I'm worried about my weight, acne or hair growth

Polycystic ovaries are not just a period problem: it is a hormonal imbalance that can cause acne, excess hair and difficulty losing weight, and over the years it increases the risk of diabetes and high cholesterol. Get checked if you have these symptoms or if you have already been diagnosed and nobody has checked your metabolism. At Gineclinic you are seen by the endocrinologist: we test your hormones and blood sugar with a blood test, which you can have at the same center, and propose treatment. If needed, the nutritionist also works on your case.

I have high blood sugar or diabetes

High blood sugar or diabetes means your body is not using glucose properly. At first it often causes no symptoms; however, it needs regular monitoring to prevent future heart, kidney or eye problems. Get checked if a blood test has come back abnormal or if it runs in your family. At Gineclinic you are seen by the endocrinologist, who reviews your blood tests and suggests the lifestyle changes you need and the treatment to follow. The center's nutritionist helps with your diet.

I find it hard to lose weight even though I look after myself

When you find it hard to lose weight even though you look after yourself, there may be a hormonal or metabolic cause, such as a thyroid problem or insulin resistance. If you've changed your habits for months without results or have gained weight for no reason, it's a good idea to see a specialist. At Gineclinic you are seen by the endocrinologist, who carries out the tests needed to look into your case, working with the center's nutritionist on a plan tailored to you.

I have high cholesterol or I'm worried about my cardiovascular risk

High cholesterol causes no symptoms, but over the years it raises the risk of heart attack and stroke, especially when other factors are added, such as high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes or a family history. Get checked if a blood test has come back abnormal or if you have any of these factors. At Gineclinic you are seen by the endocrinologist, who assesses your situation and suggests the plan you need.

I'm tired and think it may be hormonal

Tiredness, lack of energy or lower sex drive can have various causes, and one of them is hormonal: a thyroid or testosterone problem. When nothing else explains it, it lasts a long time and doesn't improve with rest, it's a good idea to get it checked. At Gineclinic you are seen by the endocrinologist, who will carry out a thorough assessment to rule out or confirm hormonal or metabolic causes.
